Gratitude – The only legitimate function of mind

Question: I once heard you saying, “A healthy man does not run away from the disease.” I have observed that after listening to this, I have become caring towards myself and for everyone else, because now I have stopped running away from my disease. I am trying to be healthier. I have started taking steps to cure the disease in me. Thank you!

Speaker: See, even this, ‘thank you’ should not come with a reason. Even the ‘thank you’ should not be objective, because you never know what to thank for. And you never know that what you are thanking somebody for, will actually turn out to be what. A ‘thank you’ directed towards the heaven is sufficient. “Thank you.” For what? “I don’t know.” “Thank you.” To whom? “I don’t know.” A general sense of gratitude.

We had begun today’s session talking about attention. We may as well say that attention is gratitude. Attention is gratitude! A general sense of well-being. ‘It’s alright’. Even in the middle of the deepest chaos, you say, “It’s alright.” Even in the middle of the deepest pain, you say, “It’s alright. It’s just alright.” That is attention. That is gratitude.

Today you are acting in one particular way, tomorrow you may act in another way. Still say, “Thank you.” Today you are finding that the situations are showing up in one way, tomorrow they may reveal another face. Still say, “Thank You.” Our ‘thank yous’ must not be dependent on the turn of events. In fact, if there is any legitimate function of the mind, it is to thank again and again, and nothing else. It is to live in gratitude. And that is all!

Do not try to imagine this mind. Do not try to capture an image of this mind, that this mind is a laid-back mind, or it is a smiling mind. This sense of ‘thank you’ goes very-very far. What it can do to life, is unthinkable! This man who is grateful, is unstoppable in whatever he does.

Let your sense of gratitude not arise from a particular situation. Once you have tasted it, let it go deeper and deeper.PicsArt_1438624375863 The mind will resist initially, but then it will learn. The mind has just been spoiled a little, but that is the game of life- being spoiled. The mind has played a particular part in the game of life. It’s a little mischievous. Don’t blame it for that. (Smilingly) Say, “Thank you” for its mischief also.

“It’s alright.” It’s a lovely mantra. You are talking of remembrance. “It’s alright, it’s alright. It’s always alright!” Are you getting it? “It’s always alright.” Let that be your base. Let that be your spinal cord. Stand on that, and then live freely. There is so much that needs to be corrected in this world. But what is my base? It’s alright. It’s a little paradoxical. It sounds a little paradoxical. There is a lot of dirt that I need to clear, but where am I operating from? It’s alright.

And I am very energetically cleaning it, sweeping it, throwing out garbage. Very-very energetically I am doing that, as if time is less, as if so much needs to be accomplished, as if I am racing, as if I am competing. An onlooker may think that I really hate this situation when things are dirty, but where is my mind located? “It’s alright. Thank you!” A deep sense of gratitude.

Yes, I have to clean it up. It is stinking, it is bad. And I realize that the onus is upon me to clean things up, and yet ‘it’s alright’. I know you are deceiving me, I can look at the facts. I know you think that I am an idiot. I know you want harm to me, and I am doing stuff to protect my body and my little interests. And in spite of realizing that, that you intend to harm me, that you are deceiving me, even then, ‘it’s alright!’

‘It’s alright’ is the very ground on which I am standing all the time. I never leave that ground. Even while fighting, I stand on that ground. Even when the greatest injustice is being done to me, and that does not mean that I tolerate injustice, I fight that injustice, it’s still alright. ‘It’s alright’ never goes away.

Everything else can go away but that never goes away. ‘It’s alright’. There is something essential that can never be taken away. ‘It’s alright!’ We can fight but we know all those fights are secondary. The primary is always there, and thank you so much for it. This ‘thank you’ is my life force. I don’t have any words for it. Thank you. And then you don’t even need attention. You are already home!
