The greatest dependence is psychological dependence

Before you talk of the future, shouldn’t you first understand what you are doing right now?

In your moments of deepest enjoyment, have you ever thought of the future? Tell me?

To look towards future, one would have to take his attention away from the present, right?

Your goals cannot be bigger than your awareness. Goals will just be within the circumference of what you know.

Life is the present moment, there is nothing else. If you are free right now, there is no need to become enslaved the next moment. Why do you want to pretend that we are slaves? You are not! You are free this moment!

And remember, financial dependence is not a great dependence. Even physical dependence may not be a great dependence. The greatest dependence is psychological dependence.

Understanding is awareness

You cannot become aware. Awareness is not something that you can achieve or becomes or reach. It is.

Even in the moment of your death, you can be still, composed, calm; that is what is meant by the inviolable certainty of awareness. That stillness is awareness.

Mathematics is knowledge; understanding is awareness.

Awareness is so total. Knowledge is always small, little. That is why those who live in knowledge never find peace. They keep hunting for more and more knowledge.

The illiterate tribal, in his own way, knows Love, that is awareness.

There is no road to awareness and there is nothing in between. All roads are in awareness.

Awareness proceeds very subliminally. Thought will not know awareness. You cannot keep an eye on awareness. You cannot watch awareness. You can only surrender to it. You can let it to do what it does, without making any, stupid attempts to rein it in.

Levels of consciousness are there. Levels of awareness are not there.

You suffer. All spirituality starts from that point. Why am I suffering? Is it necessary to suffer?

And mind you, awareness is not there in every being. Every being is there in awareness. What you call as every being, is a figment of consciousness.

Awareness cannot be there ‘in’ you because what you call as yourself and the world is just consciousness.

The past, first of all, raises a future, then directs the mind to chase that future.

Without any self-inquiry, we claim that we are a product of our city, a product of our economic situations. And, when we say that, are we not using that statement just to hide our fear, just to remain what we are? You let yourself to be defined by your past, by your experiences, by your gender, by your religion, by your money, by your knowledge. And you will have to look at the future, the next big thing.

You will have something unended continue in your mind. You will have scores to settle. You will have an unfinished task. The past has no intentions ever of remaining a past. In fact, calling it as past is a mistake. You know what past means? Past means left behind. You say you have gone past something. The past is never left behind, you never go past it. If there is one thing which can never never be left behind, it is the past. It will continue. In fact, it will jump ahead of you. Not only will it stay with you, it would be running ahead of you.

It would be running ahead of you like a guide. A very deceptive guide. Nevertheless something, someone, that claims to be a guide. Most of us think that the past is there behind the back. No, the past is there in front of the eyes. Not only it is in front of the eyes, it is actually guiding the eyes, guiding the mind, guiding the feet. The past decides what our future would be like.

The past, first of all, raises a future, then directs the mind to chase that future. Is there anything that you think of, anything that you feel happy about, anything that you feel disappointed about that is not coming from your past? Are all our disappointments not cultivated disappointments. Had you not been told by the movies, by the novels, by family, by all the mythological stories, that this is something that you need to feel bad about, would you still have felt bad about such things?

This thought of success itself is sadness

Success, achievement, these thoughts come to you only when you’re feeling down. Only when you feel life has not been good to me. Only when you feel I have lost out on something, then you say I want to be successful, right? So, the thought of success itself is a very sad thought. Do you see this? The thought of success itself arises only in a sad mind. When the thought itself arises from a sad mind, how can this so-called success give you happiness? Just get rid of the sadness. Don’t chase happiness. There is no point chasing happiness, just get rid of sadness. And what is sadness? This thought of success. This thought of success itself is sadness. Get rid of it.

It arises because of an artificial sense of inadequacy that we have. Unnecessarily we have been forced to believe that this is missing, that is missing. We find it very hard to accept that life is a simple, continuous, innocent festival. It’s very difficult to accept. We have been trained to accept that life is an effort, challenge, war, accomplishment. We will become terrified if told that life is not any of these. You are not here to work hard and attain something. That is not at all why you are here.

You say then, “Why are we here, just like this?” Yes just like this. Relax, dance, enjoy. Nothing more nothing less. But even these words are giving you tension. “We will have to relax now? Where to learn that from? BRE: Bachelors in relaxation, you need a degree even for that.” You lost all touch with that which is innate.

You have no obligation to win, lose or even participate.

Even when you are identified with being a winner or the loser, still there is something within you which can neither be a winner nor a loser. I just called it the third state. It is not the third state. It is your fundamental nature. It is your fundamental nature that gets hidden when you are obsessed with winning and losing. The fact is – deep within, you don’t bother and that’s such a relief, such a mercy.

Fact is, after the greatest victory, when you go to sleep, the victory is gone and the victor is nowhere. And after the greatest loss, when you again go to sleep, you are neither the loser, nor is the game anywhere. And you like it. Don’t you?

Is there anybody who hates himself sleeping? IS there anyone who says, “No, it’s such a bad day. I cannot go to sleep.” Sleep is always relaxing; always because in sleep you are neither one nor two. That is the secret of sleep. That three is always there. Just don’t push yourself too hard. Don’t be too severe with yourself.

You have no obligation to win, lose or even participate. In your sweet will, in your innate joy, you may decide to participate, in your playfulness, you may even decide to go for a win; in your love, you may decide to lose. But none of that must matter too much with you. Your essential freedom lies in your ability to walk in at any point and also to walk away at any point.

Join the game, leave the game. Join the war, leave the war. Join the war without bothering about what can befall you, what kind of harm, what kind of wounds or what kinds of glory and victory and leave the war without wondering what the others might think of you and what are the opportunities that you are squandering?

Your freedom does not merely lie in not playing the game.

Your freedom also lies in joining the game as and when you please. And the one who is able to join the game as and when he pleases, is also the one who will be able to leave the game as and when he pleases.

What does it mean to be devoted to the Truth?

In the world, we have two kinds of movement: One is the movement towards Truth, powered by the Truth. The other is the movement when we see something in which we do not see the Truth, yet we see it as attractive. Does it not happen with us?

You see something, and you don’t see the Truth in it, and yet you find it attractive.

To be devoted to the Truth means: “I will not give value to this attraction.”

And you cannot use this as a formula or a principle. Not giving value to something, is something very intrinsic, it happens. It happens when you see that, that which you are pursuing, is something that you have been pursuing relentlessly since long, since centuries, since the beginning of time. And it has only given you suffering. And then your steps freeze. Then you do not want to proceed. Then you see that this particular chase is no different from the chase of yesterday, which was in its turn no different from the chase of day before yesterday. And all these chases have only resulted in a situation where you need to chase more and more.

If you need to chase today, and if you were chasing yesterday, was yesterday’s chase of any avail?
Had it be of any consequence, would you be left to chase even today? Chasing yesterday, if you have to chase even today, it only means that these chases are generally futile, and lead to the suffering. Lead to this stage where you have to chase even more. And then your steps freeze. And that is devotion towards the Truth.

Man is not born to adjust and compromise and somehow tolerate his seventy, eighty years and then at the end of the journey say, “Thank God the seventy years are over. It was a nightmare, glad, I am out of it. Death is such a nice thing.”

When you die at eighty, you say, “Mercifully I am out of it.”

That is what we are heading for. “Thank God we are out of it, such an ordeal”
What to do with life? Bear it? Tolerate it?
Look at the child, look at the animal; they love themselves, at least they don’t hate themselves. We have our two dogs and you may cajole them, temp them but if they don’t want to eat something they will not eat it even if it breaks your heart. You may give them the best of dishes right from your own plate and if he doesn’t want it, he will not take it. He will say “My health comes first. Your love is alright, thank you. I don’t want to take it, too oily for me. I don’t want to become like you!”
The child knows self-love — he will never harm himself to please others, never. “Why should I force my bladder? Your bed sheet is not more important than my bladder. I will do what I want to do. You may have bought a rupees-three-hundred ticket for the movie; I want to enjoy in my own way, not your movie, not the movie of the entire audience present in the whole theater, nobody is more important than my urge to shout out. I want to shout out, I will shout out. I don’t bother, call it selfishness if you want to, I am selfish.”
But then somebody has taught you to not to be selfish and that translate into not having self-love. So you will bear anything; bear.
The child does not want to please anybody and that is innocence. He is not requesting favors from anybody — that is innocence. We want something from somebody that’s why we keep tolerating that’s why you keep tolerating; greed. You want something from somebody, so keep tolerating.

You are an accepted child of the universe.

You might be the worst social offender, you might have broken laws, you might not have kept your vows, you might have not completed your degrees, you might be economically unproductive, you might not be knowledgeable, and you might not be an expert in any field — that does not matter.

Existence has no care for your achievements.

The sun would still shine upon you. The rose would not turn its face away from you. The moon would still be available to you. Existence is not anthropomorphic. It does not believe in man-made ways. The society may say that you do not look pretty, but if you go and look at your face in a pond, in a pool, in a lake, the lake would not despise you. The lake would welcome you just as it welcomes the beautiful moon. So, it does not matter where you stand, what people think of you, and what is your social standard. It does not matter even what you think of yourself. You are an accepted child of the universe.

The universe accepts you just as much as it accepts a ‘Buddha’. It gives them no special favors. And it does not discriminate against you. Even in your worst hour, you may find that a butterfly comes, and quietly sits upon your shoulder. The judge there is pronouncing you guilty of the most heinous offenses and the butterfly is quietly sitting upon your shoulder, not at all bothered by what man made laws are proclaiming you to be.

Do you get this?

Equally they might be crowning you the most beautiful woman in the universe, but that does not deter the crow from dropping a little-bit of blessings on your forehead! May be that is his way of accepting that you are so beautiful.

I am repeating this: It’s a very simple thing. Nothing complicated about it. There is nothing at all wrong about being whatever you are — tall, short, good, bad, man, woman, qualified, unqualified, read, unread, achiever, non-achiever. Everything is just okay. It is not even okay, it is irrelevant.

The universe is indifferent to your qualifications. What is not okay is hiding, pretending, rejecting, suppressing. Loneliness is alright. Pretending that you are not lonely is not alright. Trying cheap substitutes for the real one is not alright. Living in self-deception is not alright.

Is there anything in our living that is beyond us?

I am not denying that one needs basic sustenance, but basic sustenance has to be basic.

It cannot become the ‘be all and end all’ of life.

We need to, very honestly ask ourselves this question, “Is there anything in our living that is beyond us?” “Is there anything in our living that will outlast normal human pettiness?”

And when I say outlast, I do not say it in terms of time, I do not mean in terms of other people remembering you and raising statues in your memory. I do not mean something in terms of future, I do not mean in terms of time after your death. I am talking of a beyondness right now, not twenty years later.

As you move around, is it just a body-mind complex moving around, hunting for its needs, for food, for water, for recognition, appreciation, respectability or is there a different quality to your movement?

And if that quality is not there, you sincerely need to ask, “Why do we move around at all?”

Let the FIRST be the first

This is the right moment, and this is the right point.

Wherever you are, is the gate.

There can be no bad time to do the only thing that deserves to be done.

For all your worldly affairs, there are right times and wrong times; opportune moments and inopportune moments.

For wisdom, how can there be any inopportune moment?

Let the FIRST be the first.

Take care of THAT, and then do whatever you want to do.

You think that there is going to be an end to the suffering, don’t you?

You think that there is going to be an end to the suffering, don’t you?

You call it by various names. You call it the achievement of your dreams, the religious man calls it enlightenment, the material man calls it achievement. But be it the material man or the spiritual man, everywhere there is a target to be realized; the material man says a billion dollars, the spiritual man or the religious man says enlightenment, moksh, nirvana.

Both of them have some target. When you have that mental image then suffering becomes unbearable. First of all realize that there is never going to be any end to all this. This is life!

This is life when you are twenty and this will be life when you will be eighty. Get rid-off of all your dreams, all the utopia that you have raised. This is life, and I am not saying this as a statement of disgust or resignation.

There is a difference between resignation and surrender. I am saying this as a statement of deep surrender, ‘I am the great totality of it all and the great totality is expressing itself in a limited way through me. And where there is limitation there is going to be suffering in this way or that way. Why complain against it? Why? And if there is no suffering, then I am not a man! I am not a man.

It is a part of your humaneness.

There is nothing called as ‘my’ desire

  • If you have a thousand rupees, you are careful about investing it. Are you careful about investing your life? ‘Where am I investing my life? Why am I investing my life?’
  • Won’t you like to examine using your own intelligence that ‘what is this running behind achievement all about’?
  • Achievement is aim’. You set up an aim, and when you get that aim then you call it as ‘achievement’.
  • Aim is a desire. You call it, ‘my’ aim. Isn’t that so? You call it, ‘my’ aim, ‘my’ target, ‘my’ desire, ‘my’ goal. That is what you call it. Right?
  • What you are calling as your desire is a result of circumstances. Had the circumstances been different, the desires would have been different.
  • You do not have your ‘own’ desires. That totally depends on your circumstances. You may keep calling it as ‘my’ desire but there is no ‘myness’ in it.
  • Do you see this fact that your desires are a product of your circumstances? Do the circumstances exist within you or outside of you?
  • So, all your desires come from outside. There is nothing called as ‘my’ desire.
