Thought is not bad

There is the mind, and the mind has the ability to think. The question is not whether you are thinking or not. The question is, who is the thinker? If the thinker is devoted to the Truth, then thoughts are just like the dance of Shiva.

Is the river of your thoughts pure enough to allure Shiva to dance in it? And Shiva will not dance in a stream impure.

There is understanding without thought and there is understanding with thought as well. Just as there is Truth, formlessly, and there is Truth, formed as well. There will be occasions when the Truth will strike you like a thunderbolt, like a flash of lightning. And understanding will be complete in a split second. And there will be occasions when you will be required to think.

But I understand your predicament. All the spiritual masters are treating thought as the worst offender. As if thought has brought in sickness and disease to your life. Not really. Thought is your expression, just as action is your expression. As you are, so your thought is. In fact, thought is so very helpful. You cannot look at your tendencies, your vrittis, directly. But thought is gross, palpable, definite, it can be watched.

When you think, you come to know of yourself. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have known. The thought of jealousy or the thought of fear arises, it helps you know that deep within somewhere, you are? Afraid.

Thought is not bad. ‘Useful’ or ‘Useless’ is the place, thought is coming from.

Truth is not the thought of truth

Who is a sage? A sage is the one who is extremely sensitive, who is able to catch even that which we normally ignore.

The saint is one who has realized that life is not also hell but just hell.

Because in thinking and concluding thus, you’ve missed the happening.

Gratefulness is not the thought of gratefulness. Joy is not the thought of joy. Truth is not the thought of truth.

Gratefulness means not having any sense of like or dislike.

The spiritual man is neck deep into action. He is not an escapist.

Because all your imagination proceeds from the centre of what you currently have made yourself to be, what you currently are.

You are a man of patterns

You are a man of mind. You are a man of reactions. You are a man of patterns. Who wants to talk to such a man?

An ordinary man in the name of learning from failures, Just tries to react differently. The second time a similar situation arises. And this he labels as learning from failure.

Zen is your essential core that reacts not, that it’s his own master. Has it’s own way of living.

Two or three years are needed so that all the pre-existing answers get clear. Not that the new answer is needed but the old answer need to go.

Real destiny is Peace

Destiny, really means, that, which is unavoidable, that which, cannot be changed.

Destiny is not the ‘fruit of action,’ but because we live in our limited prospective, so we take the results of our actions as our destinies.

Your real destiny is the Truth, the ‘real destiny’ is ‘peace.’

Remember that even when you trying to get the Truth or Peace, it is Truthand Peace that drive you.

Your destiny is the great silence, that is where you are and if you do not consciously acknowledge that, that is where you have to reach. Nothing else is your destiny.

Destiny is related to the word destination. And what does destination means? The finality. The climax. The highest. The ending and the dissolution. You are already there.

Acharya Prashant: Destiny is That which is unavoidable

Acharya Prashant: What do you mean by destiny?

Listener: Blessed, that which is blessed or that which is decided, or pre-decided. I think it is from the law of karma.

AP: No Karma is pre-decided, so destiny obviously cannot be related to karma. That which pre-exists, pre-exists karma also, so karma cannot be the decider of the destiny. Obviously.

L: I heard of the three types of karma – Agami, Parabda, Sanchitta.

AP: All three have a background.

All three have a background, Agami, Parabda, Sanchitta, all three have a background. And all three have their respective fruits. When you say destiny is something that is preordained, then obviously it has to go, prior to karma and even the cause of karma.

Destiny, really means, that, which is unavoidable,

that which, cannot be changed.

That which is inevitable. That pre-exists everything that happens. And that will exist post all happenings. And what is that? Nothing, but emptiness, Truth. Which was there before the beginning of time and which exists, even after, the time has withdrawn. That alone is destiny, nothing else.

I repeat,

Destiny is not the ‘fruit of action,’ but because we live in our limited prospective, so we take the results of our actions as our destinies.

No,

Your real destiny is the Truth, the ‘real destiny’ is ‘peace.’

The proof of that is unless you get that real unless you get Truth and Peace. You will not relax.

His suffering will be your suffering

What is right for one, cannot be right for the other. The method that suits one, cannot suit the other.

And when you see better, then you know on your own, the step to take, the direction to move.

The moment you cause suffering, it is to yourself that the suffering has been caused.

If you do not know what is not right for him, surely, firstly you do not know what is right for you. His suffering will be your suffering.

Influences are the celebration of life

This nose, these eyes, this language, these clothes, these thoughts, they are all influences. Influences by themselves are no guarantors of suffering.

Influences are the celebration of life.

In fact, in being totally open to influences, you are leading a total life.

The teacher is one who is totally open to influences, who is totally available to the situation. The disciple is one who lives in standards in benchmarks.

To him, this directionlessness, this non-resistance is his total oneness with existence.

The real one has nothing to defend, so he never defends.

And after calling him all the names, you are left with no more names, that’s when you fall silent and that is teaching.

Do not try to judge it on your moral platforms. That judgment will not be wrong, it will be simply irrelevant.

If you have a direction then you are not directionless.

The direction does not keep on changing. Your ways keep on changing. The destination that you have set for yourself that does not change. Your destination is a pleasure.

Limitation itself is the sin

Who are we?

Limited beings with their limited desires, limited scope, limited understanding, limited vision.

The limitation itself is the sin.

A Jesus is there to help you get rid of your incompleteness.

But instead of thanking Jesus and living by his word, you choose to crucify him.

Remember the crucifixion.

Because if you forget the crucifixion, you’ll also forget your immediate reality.

The immediate reality is important.

One must know where one is standing.

Where one ought to be, or where one must reach comes later. And man does not stand at the perfect spot.

The one who is lost must know that he is lost. If he starts believing that he is home, then he will remain forever lost.

Only the healthy one has the right to say that he is healthy.

Only a Jesus has the right to say that he is the son of God.

Where there is ego, there is bound to be fear.

Fifty types of fears just pop up.

Fear is going to be there, choose your type.

Which fear do you prefer?

The superficial desire is actually a product of the deep desire. But the irony is such that the superficial desire, though arising from the deep desire, actually works against the deep desire.

The ego is always God loving at the core, and it is great when at the core the ego is God loving and on the surface the ego is God fearing.

Be a lover of God in your heart, but your mind must always be afraid of God.

One must be afraid of himself.

Being God-fearing means being fearful of oneself, and being fearful of losing God.

One must be very very alert to these tendencies;

One must be very very watchful.

The scriptures, and parallelly observation of life, I stress equally upon the two.

There are two things that must be parallelly done. One, knowing it from those who have known, supposed to have known, if you are a skeptic then. Learning it from those who have known or are supposed to have known. Secondly, testing it out, for yourself.

So, first thing, the scriptures, and parallelly observation of life. I stress equally upon the two. Please be very very observant, what’s happening. How am I spending my day? Why are those two countries fighting? You will learn a lot about the mind. A lot, a lot, a lot. It’s great to watch yourself. But if you can’t watch yourself or in addition to watching yourself, also watch the world. Watch, how people are going about on the streets? Watch how communities are behaving? Watch, what’s there in the newspapers? That too is useful.

But if you just let that in, there is a danger, it can just become accumulated knowledge. I know, I have general knowledge. You can become, worldly wise. So, parallelly there must be the blessings of scriptures. These are like you know, two wings of the bird. Together they make you, help you, fly.

Seek it from all the Gurus of the world, and also rely parallelly on the unique and the independent capacity of your mind. Be so confident of yourself that you are not hesitant in seeking help. You must have so much confidence that you can confidently seek help.

One has to be deeply in love with oneself

It is not possible to be living in illusions and yet not suffer. But it is possible, to not to be conscious of the suffering. Or, to not to know that you are suffering.

One has to be deeply in love with oneself, one has to be deeply sensitive towards oneself to experience the suffering. If you don’t love yourself enough, then you will happily take suffering. And not complain.

After all, suffering is resistance towards pain. If you have no resistance then you have no suffering. Then there will be pain and yet you will not suffer.

Suffering is when you start saying, “No” to pain. When pain is welcome, then there is no suffering.

Spirituality is the art of living in the small

It is important to see that you are not tricked two-three times. You are being tricked constantly. You are being tricked only because you think you are being tricked only two-three times. If you are being fooled constantly, but you detect it only two times, what does it prove? That you are actually being fooled a lot. If the mind is actually a trickster, is the trickster selectively at work, or always at work? Always at work. It is always fooling you and hence it is important to catch its tricks in small matters.

You catch the mind only when you find the consequences as alarming, only when you find the harm beyond the limit. But, the mind is fooling you even right now. Catch it. See, what it is defending and hiding. See, what its intentions are. When you are alert with the small, then you are seated in the big.

You could even say that spirituality is the art of living in the small. It is not about chasing some great heavenly God. It is about doing your daily small matters, the linen, and the dishes, the garage, and the garbage, the small, the routine, the daily, the trivial. It is about doing these things rightly. It is not about knowing the perfect prayer. Hence, it is not something specific, or relevant to a place of worship, or special time, or occasion. To wake up in the morning, it’s a spiritual time. You are driving to your office, it’s a spiritual time. It’s a spiritual car. You are at your workstation, it is the time for prayers. You are buying grocery, you are offering salutation. That is spirituality.

It is not about wearing a special mark on your forehead or getting yourself tattooed. It is about letting the Truth pierce your heart, not letting the shopkeeper pierce your nose or navel.

The wall is as open a book as the Upanishads

Grace might be falling freely, but you are not in a position to receive it because you are confined with the limits of the person; and the person does not know Hindi. Hence you require a medium on the outside that tally’s with; who is conducive to, who matches with the requirements of your personality.

In such a case, the master, also needs to be a person. Because you cannot hear walls speak. The wall is as open a book as the Upanishads. But you cannot hear the walls speak. Because you are a person, you only need a person speak. In such case, you require that grace appears in front of you like a person.

Otherwise, the master is really not a person. And the more you advance, the more your person-hood is dissolved, the more you see, you do not need a person in front of you. In fact, the shape of the master will change according to your shape! As long as you are one type of a person, you will find that the teacher is of one type. The more your constitution, your personality changes; you will find the personality of the teacher is also changing. In fact, the teacher has no definite personality. His personality is just a veneer that he has put up in order to assist you.

You change; you will find him changing. When you are moving out of your persona, you will find the teacher is also moving out of your persona. That is why the teacher is bound to disappear one day. He appears only in forms that are useful to you. The moment that utility is exhausted, he is done.

Guru is the realization that even the maya is Brahm

Guru is the realisation that, all that which is denoted by ‘Gu’ need not take control or possession of me, that, ‘ru’ is possible to co-exist along with ‘Gu’; ‘ru’ means standing still, ‘Gu’ means all the movements that you see. Guru means a great paradox where ‘Gu’ and ‘ru’ co-exist, where the periphery and the center dance with each other, where the sky and stars are one with each other. The sky has no form, no shape, doesn’t come, doesn’t go. The stars were born, the stars will go, and yet they are so one with each other – that is Guru.

The Guru is the one that powers the seeing, the Guru is the seer and the Guru is the seen.

The Guru is not the object in your universe, the Guru is the foundation of the universe.

Guru hence is freedom from the great fear of death. With ‘Gu’ there is only death. With ‘ru’ there is neither birth, nor death. In ‘Guru’ there is immortality in the middle of death.

Guru is the name of the great game. A game in which there is neither victory, nor loss, just fun. When fun is divine, you call it as Joy.

To know the Guru, is to know the Truth. To know the Guru, is no different than knowing the Atman, the Brahm absolutely.

The great game is ‘of the Truth’, ‘in the Truth’ and is nothing but the Truth. And hence in this great game, the Truth keeps showing up in all possible ways; nothing else but the Truth shows up.

The realization that the false has no recourse but to submit to the Truth, is the Guru. The realization that even the false is Truth, is the Guru.

Guru is the realization that even the maya is Brahm.

Fact carries no ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’

It is easy to intellectualize stuff here. I am talking of Real life. It is very easy to say, “Oh, you know, if you are the Sat-chit-ananda, then anger does not matter”.
Does anger does not matter really when you are fighting and negotiating with the man on the street? Does it matter to you or not?
So, don’t just give hypothetical and ideal answers. Answer from your life. Answer from the way you interact with your boss, your wife, your kid, the man on the street; the stranger, the robber. Look at that. Stare at the facts on the face. Look at the way the world is – violent, chaotic, anarchic. What is the point in talking of great ideals?
Why talk “ifs” and “buts”? The fact carries no “ifs” and “buts”. The fact is just there, not conditional, not “if”.
You cannot be told that, “You know, if you ‘think’ of yourself as pure consciousness then you will feel peace”.
If you ‘think’ of yourself as pure consciousness?
The bugger does not even know that every thought is a disturbance. Peace is when thoughts are not there, not needed.
And the remedy he is suggesting is, “No, if you ‘think’ of yourself as pure consciousness!”
And what exactly is that – ‘pure consciousness’?
Some great pristine image!

Real Teacher would never be too acceptable

The Real Teacher would never be too acceptable. He would not look like a pleasing fatherly figure because only that pleases you which allow you to continue as you. And the Teachers’ responsibility is to not to let you continue as you.
What is it that you find pleasurable? You find only that pleasurable, which is an extension, a continuation of your ways, of your ego. So, if you really like a teacher, you say, “Wow, nice one! I want to go to him”, it only proves that he is some kind of a plum cake for you, pleases your senses.

You like going to a shopping mall. You also like going to Satsangs. You are the same. The ‘liking’ too is coming from the same centre.

Rightful role of the Teacher

The Real Teacher has a great responsibility to make himself unnecessary. But what if the Teacher is known by his follower-ship?And mind you, the Real ones hardly ever had any follower-ship. It is the primary duty of the Teacher to make himself redundant.
You have helped someone only if he no longer needs your help.
But, if the Guru has his own self-interest in mind, he will continue to ensure you return to him day after day. And you can continue to return to him only if he pleases you. That’s one clear indication of the self-interest of the Guru.
The Real ones were always myth-busters, iconoclast. They never pleased their audiences. That is why they got the treatment that they did – discarded, stoned, killed, crucified. They had no concern for the status-quo. They had no concern for what you like. They were not pleasant. They were not smiling. They didn’t wanted to make you feel good. They were not bothered whether you returned to them or not. They did not make arrangements that a thousand people must come to me.
The Teacher’s role is to show that a teacher is not needed. That is the rightful role of the Teacher.

Guru’s words

If you see problems in the Guru, if you see imperfections and lapses, will you ever really take his medicine? Will you really have confidence in his prescription, let alone faith?  But when you are smart and stubborn then you have confidence only in yourself. No Krishna, no Shiva, no Brahma, no Vishnu can save you; you are your own teacher!

Remember what Ashtavakra is saying, remember what Krishna is saying. These words are not for somebody who lacks in penance, who has not put himself through the fire of self-purification. These words are not for somebody who is not totally devoted to the Truth.

Guru’s words are not at all for somebody who has the slightest of doubt in the Guru.

Life is the Guru

Life anyway does a lot of things to everybody which help them wake up. We are just one of those things, we are no special.

The fellow may fail in his semester exams and wake up. That fellow may break up with his girlfriend and wake up. The girlfriend is a guru, the exam is a guru. We are only as much of a guru. If you want to call us a guru, then the exam is also a guru; then the girlfriend is also a guru because life itself is presenting situations and these situations are present in front of everybody.

Buddha woke up by looking at a corpse – a dead body!

Life is giving you opportunities all the time.

Life is the Guru.

We are a part of life. Yes, we are a guru, of course! Why not? Because when the Source itself is the guru, everything in the life is Guru. So we are Guru but that does not mean that the piece of chair, the wood is not the guru. Wood is also a guru. All is Guru.

It is just incidental that how the light of the divine will shine upon someone.

Judgement

We judge others so that we can feel superior in comparison to them. We judge others so that our own evils appear smaller in comparison to them. Then such judgments are indeed evil.

Look at the lives of the Saints and the Prophets. They have often very clearly declared the wrong to be wrong – which is in today’s parlance – a clear case of being judgmental. They were very judgmental, but they were judgmental because they were compassionate. Such judgments are alright.

Was not Christ judgmental?

Look at his utterance, and you will see several of the things that he said, if you say them, people will say that you are judging. Was not Kabir judgmental?

You get the right to judge others only after you have first judged yourself rightly, and that requires honesty.

It has to begin with you

When you say that it is possible to challenge the false, then your life has to be a proof of that challenge. And when you come up to people not only with your words but with the backing of your life, then people appreciate it, then you are credible. Otherwise, you are just talking.

So, it has to begin with you. First of all, you have to be that who can be the messenger; who can be the Teacher.

In repeating the knowledge, you are only perpetuating misery because they already have a lot of knowledge.

And do you know what happens if you are not living what you are saying?

Then you produce more and more cynicism in people. people say, “Another one from the fake ones and because I see only the fake ones hence it is proven that Truth does not exist.” So, instead of being a teacher of Truth, you become a messenger or rather a proof of the false.
